Step into a world of transformation, colour, and wonder

This enchanting, hands-on workshop introduces children to the magical life cycle of butterflies through interactive experiences, sensory exploration, and creative art.

Participants will discover how caterpillars grow, transform, and emerge as beautiful butterflies, while learning about habitats, food sources, adaptations, and the important role butterflies and moths play in our ecosystems. Designed especially for younger audiences, the session combines simple scientific concepts with play-based learning to spark curiosity and imagination.

A highlight of the workshop is the Butterfly Tent Experience, where children can enter a mesh tent to observe butterflies up close. Participants may have the opportunity to gently hold or even feed a butterfly, creating a memorable and meaningful connection with living creatures and amazing photo opportunities.

Children will also explore real caterpillars and chrysalises, observing different stages of the life cycle and discussing the changes that occur during metamorphosis.

The workshop concludes with a range of butterfly-themed art activities, tailored to suit different ages and abilities. Through painting, collage, and creative play, children express what they’ve learned while developing fine motor skills and creativity.

This workshop is designed to be engaging, educational, and fun—encouraging a deeper appreciation for nature and the environment.

Western Australian Curriculum Alignment (Science – Biological Sciences)

This workshop aligns with the Western Australian Curriculum in Science (Biological Sciences) and supports the development of foundational understanding about living things, their features, and life cycles.

It is designed to align with core conceptual learning outcomes, including:

  • Living things have basic needs (food, water, shelter, air)
  • Living things have observable features and characteristics
  • Living things grow and change over time
  • Many living things have life cycles with distinct stages
  • Living things are suited to their environments and habitats

🌱 Science Inquiry Skills (P–2 Focus)

Students engage in age-appropriate science inquiry through:

  • Observing and describing living things using the senses
  • Asking questions and sharing ideas about natural phenomena
  • Participating in guided, hands-on investigations
  • Recording and communicating observations in simple forms
  • Comparing changes and identifying patterns in nature

🦋 How the Workshop Supports Learning

This experience brings curriculum concepts to life through:

  • Direct observation of live caterpillars, chrysalises, and butterflies
  • Understanding the butterfly life cycle through real examples
  • Exploration of animal features and survival needs
  • Guided questioning and discussion in a hands-on environment
  • Safe, supervised interaction within a Butterfly Tent experience
  • Creative response through butterfly-themed art activities

🎨 Cross-Curriculum Connections

The Arts (Visual Arts)
Students use materials, colour, shape, and texture to create butterfly-inspired artworks, supporting creative expression and fine motor development.

General Capabilities

  • Critical and Creative Thinking (observing, questioning, imagining)
  • Personal and Social Capability (respect for living things, shared experiences)
  • Ethical Understanding (care for animals and natural environments)
  • Literacy (describing observations and ideas)

📘 Curriculum Codes

Where required for planning documentation, this workshop also aligns with:

  • ACSSU002 – Living things have basic needs
  • ACSSU017 – Living things have external features
  • ACSSU030 – Living things grow, change and have life cycles
  • ACSIS011 / ACSIS012 – Participate in guided investigations and use senses to explore
  • ACSIS024 / ACSIS025 – Pose questions and make observations
  • ACSIS038 / ACSIS039 – Compare observations and communicate findings
  • ACAVAM107 / ACAVAM108 – Use materials and techniques in the visual arts

💡 Teacher Value Summary

This workshop supports curriculum delivery by providing:

  • A live biological science experience that cannot be replicated in the classroom
  • Hands-on engagement with life cycle concepts central to Pre-primary–Year 2 science
  • Opportunities for guided inquiry learning and observation-based discussion
  • A creative arts extension that reinforces scientific understanding
